When I first started blogging, I went on the free blogger’s platform. Then after some years, I decided to get my own domain names and since then I have never regretted it. My only regret is that I didn’t do it earlier! But then again, it’s never too late to start wherever you are and if you think it’s a hassle to get your frequent readers to change their bookmarks or subscription, I don’t think it’s a reason not to switch to your own domain name if you feel you want to do so.
Anyway, when I first made the decision to have my own dotcom, I thought of buying a local domain instead of one that’s ending with just dotcom or dotnet. I wanted it that way because I thought it is important to show where I’m coming from so that it’s more self explanatory and also localised.
But I found that in this country, it was a lot more complicated at that point in time to buy a local domain name versus the process to purchase a dotcom. So in the end I gave up on the local domain name registration.
Recently a friend of mine moved to Japan and is also thinking of moving her blog from a free sub-domain to her very own domain. She also had the same thought that I initially had, to localise it to a Japanese domain. She was very quick to start her search for a domain registration .jp. She found that she has endless choices of resources to go buy them from. I can’t imagine any less, it’s Japan, for crying out loud!
She said all she did to find the resources was to type in the simple words like domains .jp and domains japan and she was spoiled for choices.
Well, did she manage to buy one or more in the end? She did. She did in fact register for a local Japan domain, and also a general dotcom for her other site. She saw the benefit of the localised one as she feels that Japanese people tend to be more supportive and loyal to all things Japanese and that they weren’t so attracted to non-Japanese site. So her personal blog with that localised domain is doing pretty well in Japan itself. Works for her, so well done to her!
As for me, I have come to accept that the dotcom still works best for me. Over here it’s unlike Japan, I don’t think people here have such localised preference for sites they surf. It’s all about the content and value and it doesn’t matter where it’s coming from. So I don’t have any qualms registering for more dotcoms or dotnets in the future.
