Most people in the work force are ambitious and have nothing less than wanting to climb to the top of the corporate ladder to be in power. With power comes the money and reward, not to mention self satisfaction of having achieved success in the corporate world.
However, only a small percentage of people actually successfully get to the top. Even a smaller percentage of people successfully maintain their top positions in today’s economy (I’m sure you’ve read of many high profile corporate figures resigning and being released by companies during the economic downturn).
Here are some smart corporate lessons that departs some good tips on how to climb the corporate ladder and stay there. Although these stories are simple and amusing, they pack a powerful message. Read the story for amusement, if you will, but learn the moral of each of these stories.
Corporate lesson 1 – Learning how to climb the corporate ladder and being at the top
A small rabbit saw the crow on a tree, and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?” The crow answered: “Sure, why not.”
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.
The moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing you must be sitting very, very high up. So start with doing and knowing a lot to be able to get to the top. Even at the top, it may not be a free world of not doing anything at all!
Corporate lesson 2 – Learning how to stay at the top of the corporate ladder
A turkey was chatting with a bull.
“I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, “but I haven’t got the energy.”
“Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull. They’re packed with nutrients.”
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating more dung, he reached the second branch.
Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was spotted by a farmer who promptly shot the turkey out of the tree.
The moral of the story: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there. Whilst you may have the gift of the gap to get you where you want to be, make sure you also have enough substance to keep you at the top.
Corporate lesson 3 – Learn who are your friends and foes in the corporate world
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it.
As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realise how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!
The moral of the story:
1) Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy. Sometimes, being entrusted with lots of work isn’t such a bad idea.
2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend. Be careful who you befriend. Not everyone can be trusted.
3) And when you’re in deep shit, keep your mouth shut! Enough said.
You may have read these popular corporate lessons from emails sent by well-meaning friends. They were probably meant as jokes to have a good read and laugh. But if you think about it, the moral of these corporate stories ring true in how you climb and stay at the top of today’s corporate world.
