10 tips to stay safe and protect yourself from attackers

Crimes are rampant these days, even in broad day light in crowded places. With the economy worsening and people are thrown out of jobs, we may face even worse social ills. With this in mind, here are some tips to help everyone stay safe and protect yourself in any way that you can should you be unfortunate enough to be a victim to such predators.

Some of these tips have been passed round in emails, and some are added on for good measure. Keep them in mind always and stay safe!

1. Your elbows are the strongest points on your body, according to Tae Kwon Do experts. Use them and use them hard on your predators should you need to fight them off in threatening situations.

2. When confronted by robbers, throw your belongings as far as you could in the opposite direction, as far away from you as possible. That’s what they are after anyway. Once you’ve thrown them all away, run in the other direction and run fast to get help and shelter.

3. For ladies especially, do not leave your bags on the front passenger seat of the car when you are driving. For that matter, do not leave your bags anywhere visible in the car as this will encourage the predators to prey on you. They do not only attack when the car is parked, they also attack while you are on the road! So keep them in the trunk or under the seat where it is not visible to people outside your vehicle.

4. When you see sheets of newspapers lying on the roads, try to avoid going over them. Some predators put nails on the roads and cover them with the newspapers. When you drive over them, your tires will puncture and you will need to pull over. When you stop by the road side, this is when they appear and attack.

5. Lock your car doors at all times. All the car doors! And lock them as soon as you step into your car. Do not wait until you’ve cranked the car engine alive. Predators are quick to attack when you least expect them too.

6. For any reason if anyone comes up to your stalled vehicle to get you to open the car door or wind down the window to speak to them, don’t ever do it. When you wind down the windor or open your door, you are vulnerable to anything they may do. They can splash chilli powder on you to handicap you before robbing you or worse yet, point a knife at you!

7. In case of an accident on the road, especially if it’s on a lonely road, try not to pull over and get down to communicate with the other vehicle driver. It’s safer for you to head to the nearest police station to make a report than to risk having some predators attack you when you stop and get out of your vehicle.

8. If you notice that you are being trailed, do not head home or to the destination you’re going to. Go to the police station! Better be safe than sorry.

9. If you are trapped in a car trunk, use your feet to kick out the back tail lights of the car. Then, put out your arms and wave to attract attention of other drivers on the road.

10. If your predator has a gun, find a way to make a run for it and preferably, run in a zig zag manner to make it harder for the predator to get a clear aim and shot at you.
