The trouble I go through just to buy a DVD player

by specky on July 13, 2009

It’s such a simple product and one that exists in many brands, models, sizes, functionalities and even in various price ranges. I haven’t bought one in the longest time (I think a few years already) and now that I need one, I thought it was going to be an easy task. Just pick a reputable brand, make sure it has enough functionalities to at least play the very basic stuff and that it’s properly warrantied. How hard can it be, right?

But as it turned out, it proved quite difficult for me to even find one that I think is suitable in every sense! There are way too many brands and the features can range from the very basic to the more sophisticated ones and sometimes I don’t even know how they are priced. You can pay for one that costs less than a hundred bucks to some that cost close to a thousand. Such a vast difference!

Then there are also those China manufactured home DVD players that try to imitate designs and features of the better known brands. I used to think those are pretty good buys but now I think they aren’t very lasting so it’s even more of a waste of money to buy something cheaper now only to have it replaced more often.

So in the end what did I end up learning from this shopping experience? I learned that all I need is a player that will play DVD, VCD, music CD and if it can also play MP3s, it would be a nice to have. I don’t need anymore functions than those. I don’t even need any karaoke features on it.
